Color Scheme: Jungle Book

Written on May 22, 2006 // Color 5 Comments

My daughter has this pop-up book with a jungle theme which I thought would be great for a color scheme. I’m a really neutral color lover, always dressing in soft blues, greens and browns, and would drink a Black & Tan if I drank. I often find it difficult working with bright colors, which also happens to be the reason you see the bright colors only as accents on my site. I’m just not brave enough yet to work in these beauties into my site.

Anyway, I really loved the jungle colors on this book, so I put together a few different color schemes with it.

Jungle Life

!(nb left)/images/archives/207.png! This was the first scheme based on the book cover as a whole. I looked at the most common colors as well as the brightest, and then I added a lighter colors based on those that would blend well and make a decent background for the darker colors.

Jungle Fruit

!(nb right)/images/archives/208.png! This scheme was based on the orange shades first. I often will find a base color or a more prominent shade to start with and then build off of that with colors that work well with that base. I also incorporated some of the tiger in this set.

Jungle Flowers

!(nb left)/images/archives/209.png! For a softer color scheme, the flowers were so different, not usually colors I would touch, but still part of the scene. Although I don’t like them personally, color isn’t about my personal tastes, but about what goes together. These colors might actually be found in a jungle and so though they aren’t as bright as the others, they can’t be ignored.

Jungle Birds

!(nb right)/images/archives/210.png! The first thing that catches my eye in this illustration is the bird. It’s the only thing that has that rich blue in it. And that red, though you could find it in a lot of other places in the picture, is most prominent here. So red and blue are the primary colors with the yellow as an accent.

  1. I really loved these palettes, especially Jungle Flowers and Birds. :)

  2. These color schemes are always so fun, Natalie. :) I downloaded the trial of ColorSchemer, and it is a kick! I really like the little shadow around the inside edge of each color swatch. It is almost like each set has ten colors, not five, because you have each color and then the deeper shade around the edge. That may not be what they intended, but I think it’s kind of cool.

  3. Joelle, I’m glad you like! You’re a fabulous designer you know, so it’s good to have you here. Erin I never really thought about that before but you’re right! There’s also the “Suggested Colors” tab that picks colors for you. Especially helpful for beginners or when you’re in a hurry.

  4. That’s awesome, thanks for the cool colors Nat! Hope you’re doing well. :)

  5. Aw, thanks! :) I saw you added the websafe variety, too. favorited
